Everyday Tasks Are Glamorous
Everyday Tasks Are Glamorous
No matter what you are doing there are everyday tasks that must be done – its part of learning and/or doing anything. Whether you are running a small business, dieting, dog training, or learning and practicing your trade.
Some say its not glamorous but I say that it is the beautiful bones of anything and everything. It’s what makes the difference between succeeding and failing. It’s what makes the difference between learning or dropping out. It’s what makes the difference between mastering and being mediocre.
When you see a performance you don’t see the thousands of hours of tedious, mundane, routine learning and practice that came before the glamour.
When you eat the wonderful fresh vegetables from the garden you forget the countless hours of preparing the soil, planting the seeds, weeding, and cultivating that were part of the wonderful crop. It is these everyday tasks that make the performance masterful and that make the vegetable crisp and sweet.
Embrace the everyday tasks and you can master anything.
Focus on the incremental gains, the little things that pieced together create a beautiful result. People do what they are good at so we need to practice the hard stuff, stuff that makes us uncomfortable, and that stuff will make us successful.
Most things have a gestation period, a time when they are developing and growing. Every goal we have has a gestation period. We must show up and be committed to the process – loving on the steps along the way to reaching the goal. As we embrace and nourish the steps along the way the goal takes shape.
Dog training is a paradigm example – each day we work with our dog starting with small task: sit, stay, heel, and down. We shape the behavior, teach the desired behavior, and celebrate the smallest of accomplishments. Dogs progress through levels of training and work for us because of our genuine appreciation for them – they know if we are faking our praise, they know if we are not really present. Dogs learn by repetition and building one step or aspect after another. Patience, fairness, and consistency are the hallmark of a good trainer. You can’t expect a dog to perform advanced behaviors by skipping steps in the process. Dogs make us remember to be present in the moment, be genuine, and celebrate the small, repetitive tasks. When our dog Jack performed trick shows no one knew the thousands of hours that went into the training. They just appreciated the end result. But Jack and I knew what we had been through to get to the performance level – that bond between us was evident and testimony to showing up and consistently putting in the time – making the small, repetitive tasks fun one training session at a time. We built our relationship by showing up even when we might rather be doing something else, by building trust brick by brick, and honoring our process together.
So focus on being present and enjoying the everyday tasks that most people would rather avoid for there is glamour in them. Mastery is made piecing together mundane tasks and showing up to practice day after day. If you are serious about running a small business, dieting, dog training, or learning and practicing your trade make the little things count. Show up and be present. Mold every brick as if it were the most important piece of the structure. bring your best game because attitude is everything.
What am I cultivating today? What am I building today? It’s the everyday tasks and our choice to appreciate them that make all the difference.
